Time is the terrible thing to waste when you are serious

It was a much younger audience at YJA and a different experience. I had anticipated that due to younger age vast majority of young men and women will be in the window shopping or non shopping mode. I was pleasantly surprised that it was not true. I also found out it is much easier to work with those who are in their mid 20's and serious mode. I guess they did not have chance to be as jaded as their counter parts in Mid 35. Here for those who missed it or those who wish to share with others.

--------------
When you were growing up you were told, "focus on the education and career - stay away from boys - become a doctor and you will have a dozen eligible bachelors asking for you hand when you are ready!" Well you pretty well kept your end of the bargain but parents are not able to even come up with a single prospect who will accept you that in your eyes is even half way decent. This was not supposed to happen. Uncle what did I do wrong, one young lady asked. She is 35 and worked hard to finish her training and getting settled in a good career. When she looks at what is available she is shocked to find out that all the men few years older than her think she is too old! So they start they usual rounds of barbaadi.com, stupid dating (musical chairs), Hook up events some of them have even taken some time off from work to concentrate on mission "find my man." With each failed attempt the pressure keeps building. Never in their wildest dream these beautiful talented highly educated women imagined what was waiting for them as they begin their spousal search.
You would think that boys have got it made. Far from it. Many men that I talked to also expressed frustration with the process. I sense some degree of phobia to commitment. The docile quite simple woman of the recent past is no more. The empowered women of current generation requires a lot more adjusting from men than in the past. They also do not have the same degree of urgency as women do. So even though at a logical level they realize that waiting longer is not going to yield any better match at the action level they seem to wander and wait for the right one (whatever that means)
I had a plenty of time to discuss this with many men and women personally and I came home with a hope that we can change this destructive dynamic that is silently killing the Desi Family Life as we knew it.
Here is the message that started the dialogue.

Saturday, Sep 19, 2009Gujarati Samaj of Central Texas is Born Again - more vibrant and younger than ever!

Gujarati Samaj of Central Texas was once again at a cross road. The current committee suddenly decided to call it quits on 9/19/2009. It seemed that they were frustrated with the degree of participants by the members. Was it time to lay Gujarati Samaj to rest just as many other Indian organization (like India Circle) have gone or was there enough energy for it to reemerge better and stronger?
Things seems pretty bleak until few hours before the last program (a Garba) on 9/19/2009. Then came a unsolicited phone call from one of the younger member of our Samaj. Neepa even though she has moved to Grand Praire was concerned about letting the next generation of children to grow up without the benefit of our Samaj.
Here is the 15 minutes that it took for ‘Born again Gujarati Samaj’ The entire hall was full of excitement and enthusiasm as we passed on the leadership to our youth. May be other organizations that are dying due to lack of steam can learn from our experience.
Let us sit back, relax and enjoy the younger generation leading the way with more vigor and energy and less politics and bickering. "Jay Ho!"

Here is the part 2 of the session. Here Hemant Patel from the audience touched a sensitive spot for the Samaj. He raised the issue of discussing the possibility of opening up marriages between different Patel samaj who might share same cultural background. Both sides had strong views.

Leuva Patidar Samaj Convention 2009 at Nashville, TN. One of the most popular session of the convention was 20/40/60 Open Fourm where the community addressed the issues facing the Samaj. Among many of the convention where such forum is held Leuva probably do the best job of honest and open discussion of the issues. Congratulations to Leuvas!
